The Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM) has launched a Speech Bank for Interpretation Training. The Speech Bank is now available to you!
Contributing to our Department’s succession planning endeavours, this initiative involved all our four duty stations in Nairobi, New York, Vienna and Geneva.
The Bank is an e-learning tool designed to help students and candidates preparing for United Nations competitive examinations for language positions and GLR exams. Through this tool, they can practice and improve the quality of their interpretation. The Bank’s initial collection comprises around 150 speeches in the six official languages of the United Nations, covering a wide array of topics. Each audio recording is conveniently accompanied by transcripts, for verification and/or self-evaluation purposes.
Users will ultimately have access to hundreds of actual speeches (sometimes edited for teaching purposes), exam archives and pedagogical speeches on UN-related topics. The Bank’s search filter allows users to select speeches using different criteria such as source language, level, duration and keywords.
The Bank can be accessed via this link and through our website.
To see how it works, please have a look at these two videos, each available in the six official languages of the United Nations (Promotional video: A, C, E, F, R, S | Tutorial: A, C, E, F, R, S).
We hope this tool proves useful and encourage you to promote it among your students, teachers, and alumni. We also welcome any feedback and suggestions you would like to share via speechbank@un.org.
Best regards,
United Nations Department for General Assembly and Conference Management
